At West Coast Fencing Academy in Austin, children can start fencing at 4. Ages 4 to 6 have their own Saturday morning class, ages 7 to 11 and 12 to 18 have their own evening groups, and adults 19 and over have a Wednesday class. No age is too late to begin. What changes with age is how fast a beginner picks up the basics and how long a class can hold their attention.
You will find other answers online: some clubs say 6 or 7, others 4 or 5. Both can be right, because the answer depends on whether a club runs a separate class for the youngest children. Ours does.
The short answer, by age
| Ages | Group | When |
|---|---|---|
| 4–6 | Kids | Saturday, 9:00–10:00 AM |
| 7–11 | Beginners and experienced | Monday and Wednesday, 6:00–7:30 PM |
| 12–18 | Beginners and Elite | Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 6:30–8:30 PM |
| 19+ | Adults | Wednesday, 8:00–9:15 PM |
Every group starts the same way, with one free class. Not sure which group fits? Call Coach Pasha at (408) 592-1244 and tell him your child's age. Which group is right for my child? has each group's prices and levels.
Ages 4 to 6: is my child ready?
A four-year-old does not need to be sporty. What helps is being able to listen to a coach for a minute, follow a short instruction, wait for a turn, and be happy to wear a mask, which covers the whole face. If your child already manages that in a swimming, dance or soccer class, they will most likely manage it on the strip. If you are not sure, the free first class is the simplest way to find out.
At our club, the class for 4 to 6 year olds is on Saturday, 9:00 to 10:00 AM. It is one hour, once a week, for beginners, and it costs $120 a month after the free class. Like every fencer at the club, young children train in full protective equipment, and we lend the kit free for the whole first month. You are welcome to watch the first class.
At this age a child is learning to fence, not competing. USA Fencing's youngest event category is Youth 8; for the 2026-27 season it is open to fencers born in 2018, 2019 or 2020, so a child born in 2021 or later cannot enter it this season (USA Fencing age eligibility, read 2026-10-16).
Ages 7 to 11
From about 7, most children can follow a longer class and remember a short sequence of moves. At our club, ages 7 to 11 train on Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 7:30 PM. Both evenings are open to beginners and to experienced young fencers, and a beginner can start on either day.
Children who want to compete can join Elite, competitive training four times a week. Elite is open to join for ages 7 to 11 and 12 to 18; no invitation is needed. In USA Fencing's 2026-27 youth events, Youth 10 is for fencers born 2016 to 2019 and Youth 12 for those born 2014 to 2017.
Ages 12 to 18
Teenagers train on Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 6:30 to 8:30 PM. On those evenings a beginner group and the Elite group train side by side, each at its own level, so a new fencer starts with other beginners. An 18-year-old trains in this group; the adult class starts at 19.
Is 10, 12 or 15 too late to start?
No. An older beginner usually learns the stance, the footwork and the rules faster than a young child, because they can follow a longer explanation, practise on purpose and are stronger and better coordinated.
What a late starter cannot make up quickly is time on the strip. USA Fencing groups youth events by birth year, not by years of experience, so a 13-year-old who started last year may meet fencers of the same age who have trained since they were 7. How long it takes to close that gap depends on how often your child trains and how much they want it, and nobody can honestly promise a number of months. More classes a week usually close it faster; what fencing costs shows the prices for one, two and three classes a week.
A teen who just wants to fence for fun, fitness and friends does not need to catch up with anyone.
Adults, 19 and over
Adults have their own class on Wednesday, 8:00 to 9:15 PM, for beginners and experienced fencers. The adult beginners' price is $120 a month. Adults of any age can compete, and USA Fencing also runs Veteran events, grouped by birth year; the youngest, Veteran 40-49, is for fencers born 1978 to 1987 in the 2026-27 season. Starting fencing as an adult covers the class in detail.
If you want to start together with your child, choose "My child and me" when you leave your number. Children train in their own age group and you in the adult class.
The first class is free at any age
There is nothing to pay for the free class; the only paper is the registration and waiver form, signed in person at the class. We lend the mask, jacket, glove and blade. Coach Pasha, an Olympian, runs your child's first class himself, and afterwards you decide whether to continue. Your child's first fencing class, step by step walks through the day, and is fencing safe for kids? answers the other question parents ask first.
Call Coach Pasha at (408) 592-1244 and tell him your child's age. If he is on the strip, leave a voicemail: he calls back within 24 hours. Or leave your number and he calls you.
