Is fencing a good sport for girls?

Fencing is one of the few combat sports where girls and women have the same weapons, the same rules and the same number of Olympic events as men. Here is what that looks like, from the first class to college.

Yes. Fencing is a good sport for girls for the same reasons it is good for any child: it is fast, it rewards timing and quick decisions, and it is fought in full protective kit. Girls and women fence the same three weapons under the same rules as boys and men, in their own events. Half of the 12 Olympic fencing events are for women, and in the 2024-25 season US colleges had more NCAA women's fencing teams than men's. At our club in Austin, children start from age 4, in groups by age, with a free first class.

Same weapons, same rules

Foil, épée and sabre are fenced by women and men alike, with the same target, the same scoring and the same rulebook. Most competitions hold separate events for women and for men. Sabre, foil and épée explains the three weapons; our club teaches sabre.

Size is not the whole story. A study of 130 well-trained fencers found no association between body measurements, such as height and weight, and their speed in fencing attacks; leg power mattered more (Ntai and colleagues, 2021). Does height or being left-handed help in fencing? looks at that research.

Women at the Olympics

At Los Angeles 2028 there will be 12 fencing medal events, and 6 of them are for women: individual and team foil, épée and sabre (LA28, fencing, read 2026-10-22).

It took time to get there. Women's individual foil came to the Olympics in 1924, women's team foil in 1960, women's épée in 1996, women's individual sabre in 2004 and women's team sabre in 2008 (Wikipedia, fencing at the Summer Olympics, event table, read 2026-10-22). So women's sabre, the weapon we teach, is one of the newest Olympic events of all. Is fencing an Olympic sport? tells the rest of the story.

Women in college fencing

In the 2024-25 season, US colleges fielded 45 NCAA women's fencing teams and 36 men's teams, with 760 women and 675 men on their rosters, according to the NCAA's own count. College fencing is small, and fencing and college gives the honest numbers and the sources, but for a girl who fences seriously it is a real option.

Is fencing male or female dominated?

At the top level, neither: the Olympic program is split evenly, and in the NCAA count above there were more women than men. At a local club, the mix depends on the club and the year.

What a girl meets at her first class

The same as any child. At our club:

  • she trains in her age group: Saturday 9:00 to 10:00 AM for ages 4 to 6; Monday and Wednesday, 6:00 to 7:30 PM for 7 to 11; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, 6:30 to 8:30 PM for 12 to 18;
  • we lend the mask, jacket, glove and blade, and every fencer trains in full protective equipment;
  • Coach Pasha, an Olympian, runs every newcomer's first class himself;
  • you are welcome to watch that first class.

Long hair is easier under the mask when it is tied back. If your daughter is nervous about a new sport, is fencing good for shy kids? walks through the first class, and is fencing safe for kids? is honest about bruises and what protects a fencer.

Girls aged 7 to 18 who want to compete can join Elite, competitive training four times a week for $275 a month. It is open to join, with no invitation needed. How fencing ratings work, and your first tournament explains the first steps.
